Chelmsford
Chelmsford is located in the county of Essex and if you have never been here before you will find that there is plenty to please the whole family. Aside from the attractions that it can claim for itself Chelmsford also makes a great base for exploring the rest of the county and beyond. Chelmsford is situated right in the heart of the county and is only a short train journey away from the centre of London and all of the attractions that the city has to offer. Stansted airport is also only thirty minutes away from the centre of town.
Chelmsford is a town that you can explore easily and safely on foot. The High Street is pedestrianised and links together the Meadows and High Chelmer which are the two large undercover shopping areas, making this a fabulous centre in which to indulge in some retail therapy. Excellent restaurants boasting international cuisines as well as a wide range of different bars and clubs make this an exciting place to be.
Historically Important
The centre of the town is dominated by the spectacular cathedral which dates back to the 15th century. Over the centuries the town has seen many famous figures, as can be witnessed by the number of blue plaques that you will find as you explore the town. The likes of Charles Dickens, Oliver Goldsmith, Gugliermo Marconi and the Duke of Wellington are all featured on plaques, as well as many others.
You can get a glimpse of what life was like during the early Georgian and Victorian eras by paying a visit to the beautiful Hyland House. This wonderful stately home is situated in more than five hundred acres of incredible parkland and makes a perfect place to visit for an afternoon or the day. Many of the rooms in Hyland House have been fully restored to their former glory and there are a number of different events that take place both at the house and in the parklands and pleasure gardens throughout the year. This is the park that provides the backdrop to the popular ‘V’ music festival every August.
Local Attractions
Essex County Cricket Club is a popular attraction with visitors as is the Chelmsford Museum which is located in Oaklands Park. There are plenty of parks which offer beautiful riverside walking trails as well as specially designed children’s play areas and adventure playgrounds. The local area is dotted with picturesque villages filled with traditional style cottages situated around village ponds and surrounded by glorious countryside.
Travel out to Great Waltham and see the stunning Tudor chimneys which adorn the Guildhall. People who love to get out and about and explore the area will find that there are a number of lovely walks that will take you through beautiful rural surroundings. Those with a love of the water will enjoy spending time on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. Travelling along the canal on a narrow boat offers a unique way to see the very best of the beautiful unspoilt countryside in the area.
